CAC-2006 ANNOUCEMENTS WORLDWIDE

This page contains excerpts from internet sites which have annouced CAC-2006, showing the conference international character in real sense and increasing interest for chemometrics worldwide. This list can give an idea about universal character of chemometrics and its conferences as well as the experience how to talk about chemometric stuff in various languages. Chemometric activities in various countries can be also traced using the list as a chemometric qualifier. Some other pages with CAC-2006 annoucements have been recently removed, before this page was established (December 2006-January/February 2007): from Croatia, France,Finland, Germany, Spain, Sweden, UK and some other countries. Some of these pages could be found only as cached.

Below is given first a brief cumulative statistics. It shows that there were 42 unique CAC-2006 annoucements, from which 8 at international and 34 at national levels. By term international were considered companies and organizations that included more than one country. National sites were those belonging universities, companies, organizations and individuals from a particular country. Multiple announcement sites belonging to a chemometric, chemistry or other group were counted as a unique site. One should have in mind that some sites were deleted before this statistics has been done. Eventhough the statistics is not complete, it can show main trends. It is interesting to note that the national annoucements occured on five continents: North America (3 sites), South America (7 sites), Europe (22 sites with Russia), Asia (Russia: 5 sites) and Africa (2 sites). The international announcement sites were physically located in the North America, Europe and Asia. All annoucements were written in seven Indo-European languages: English (39 sites), French (3 sites), German (1 site), Norwegian (1 site), Portuguese (2 sites), Russian (5 sites) and Spanish (1 site).

The manuscripts in this special issue of ACA are contributions that were presented at the CAC 2004 conference. CAC 2004 was the ninth international conference on Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry and was held in Lisbon, Portugal from 20 to 23 September 2004. The efficient organization and the kind welcome received were responsibility of the local organizing team, presided by Dr. Jose Cardoso de Menezes, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, I.S.T. Lisbon, Portugal. There were 240 participants present, originating from 40 different countries. A significant part of the participants came from outside Europe, including Asian and South American countries.

The conference motto was “New Challenges for a Maturing Science”. The program was organized around themes that emphasized new developments and applications of chemometrics in Biosciences, Chemistry, Chemical & Process Engineering, Food, Environmental and Pharmaceutical areas that reflect the important issues in chemometrics research.

A special session was included in which Prof. Bernard Vandeginste gave an interesting lecture on the history, foundation and founding fathers of chemometrics. Prof. Massart, one of the founders of the CAC conference, was unable to attend the conference due to illness, but his words and his presence came to us through a significant and moving videotape. This session, where many of the parent voices of chemometrics could be listened in a relaxing atmosphere, was highly appreciated by all participants.

The conference dinner was also the venue for the presentation of the fourth Elsevier Chemometrics Award for the noteworthy contributions in the field of chemometrics by a young chemist. The award of this edition was shared by Karl Booksh, from the Arizona State University, and Anna de Juan, from the Universitat de Barcelona.

This CAC conference was again very successful and motivating. The many contributions, the posters as well as the lectures, have certainly challenged the participants to develop new approaches to solve the major scientific challenges in chemometrics. We are convinced that everyone is already looking forward to CAC 2006 that this time will be held for the first time at the other side of the Equator, namely, in Brazil state of S. Paulo (Campinas) from 10 to 14 September 2006. The motto of CAC 2006 will be Chemometrics in the Tropics, Nature, Medicine and Industry.

The last paragraph of this article

English translation of this paragraph:

"Chemometrics in Brazil finally became mature after 25 years. It is not more necessary to explain that it is not about chemotherapy. Efforts of many enthusiastic researchers in chemometrics contributed to this situation, as well as three summer schools of chemometrics organized by the Department of Chemistry of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro with Profs. Pércio Farias (1999), José Godoy (2000) and Ricardo Aucélio (2004) as coordinators. Today there are groups working on development of chemometrics in various states, not only at universities but also in some well-known companies. Besides, diverse postgraduate courses and even some undergraduate courses offer chemometrics. Probably the best sign of consolidation of chemometrics in Brazil is the International Conference on Chemometrics In Analytical Chemistry, known as CAC, that will be organized for the first time south to the equator. The tenth CAC, with its theme "Chemometrics In The Tropics", will be hosted at Unicamp in September 10-14, 2006 under the coordination of Prof. Márcia M. C. Ferreira."
