Brazilian Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry

Presentation

     Dear colleagues, the Brazilian Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry (BrazMedChem2008) will be held at Hotel Summerville Beach Resort, located in Porto de Galinhas in the State of Pernambuco, November 9-13, 2008.

     This is the fourth edition of an event for students, post-doctoral fellows and scientists. Based on historical trends, we can say that this will be an edition crowned with success and that many Brazilians and foreigners will participate. As in previous editions, this is a scientific event of international character that has the main objective of joining together Brazilian Medicinal Chemists in discussions and directions of the state-of-the-art in designing new drugs (medicines). It is an event that has the support of the Division of Medicinal Chemistry (MD) of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ).

     Since the establishment of the Brazilian Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry in 2001 (BrazMedChem2001), it has been prone to achieve understanding and gather true information that leads to knowledge.

     The BrazMedChem2008 will have the participation of renowned Brazilian and foreign scientists specialized in areas already enlightened in the Symposium: Molecular Design, Structure-Activity Relationships, and Medicinal Chemistry of Natural Products. The vocational guidance for students associated with the scientific development and with a view on technological innovation will continue in this edition of the BrazMedChem.

     The Brazilian Medicinal Chemistry comes up strengthening over the years thanks to many activities related to the development of pharmacotherapy. The central theme of the BrazMedChem2008 will be "Systems Chemical Biology".

     In this new edition of the BrazMedChem we will introduce a novelty: four short-courses will be offered to undergraduate and graduate students. These short-courses will focus on pharmacological effects, chemical classes, targets, biological screening and structure-activity relationships.

     The BrazMedChem2008 Organizing Committee took back the commitment to hold an unforgettable event to the utmost interest in Brazilian pharmacotherapy aiming at improving human health.

     This is an itinerant event. The first three editions took place in the Southeast area of Brazil. This year we travel to Pernambuco, the cradle of the Brazilian Medicinal Chemistry. Once again, we rely on your participation.

     Come to the BrazMedChem 2008. Come to Porto de Galinhas!

We look forward to welcoming you as a special attendee at our BrazMedChem2008!

The Organizing Committee.

Medicinal Chemistry

Science to the service of human health

Medicinal chemistry is a chemistry based science that deals with, but is not limited to:

(i) innovation; discovering and development of new chemical entities;
(ii) synthesis or molecular modification;
(iii) extraction, isolation, structural identification and elucidation of natural products;
(iv) description of molecules in their many different levels beginning with atomic constitution (going through structure property relationships - SPR) until the interaction to their therapeutical targets;
(v) comprehension to the molecular level of biochemical, toxicological and pharmacokinetic processes and creation of structure activity relationships (SAR);
(vi) comprehension of the cellular phenomena in vitro and in vivo.

About the symposium

The Brazilian Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry, whose acronym is BrazMedChem was held for the first time in 2001 in the city of Caxambu - MG, chaired by Prof. Dr. Carlos Montanari. Born to be an international symposium on medicinal chemistry not by choice but by due to its universalistic option in nature.

The BrazMedChem2004 was held in Rio de Janeiro, under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Jose Daniel Figueroa Villar. The BrazMedChem2004 was held to reach great success for the Brazilian Medicinal Chemistry. During this event, a group of people created the Historic BrazMedChem Advisory Committee aiming at the disclosure of information, motivation and education of Brazilian students to encompass the evolution of several different characteristics inherent to this science. It is based on chemistry and has a strong vocation for innovation, discovery and development of new drugs useful to treat diseases that have burdened humanity for centuries.

This group aims to provide a forum for active discussion about the medicinal chemistry and find ways to contribute to the development of pharmacotherapy in Brazil.

The unprecedented success of the BrazMedChem2006, chaired by Prof. Dr. Glaucius Oliva, set the BrazMedChem to international scenario with a fabulous cast of worldwide renowned research scientists. Click BrazMedChem2006 to see the list of invitees.

The BrazMedChem2008 is once again committed to bring science and technology to brazilian life by offering you another unforgettable meeting. Please, go through the BrazMedChem2008 homepage and enjoy carefully what we expect from this event. Come and join us.

Objectives

The objective of the BrazMedChem2008 is to provide a scientific atmosphere strong enough to stimulate and develop the science of medicinal chemistry. The challenge of continuous learning and meeting the cooperation between the Brazilian researchers and foreign scientists through associations/collaborations is fundamental to our proposal.

Actions of BrazMedChem for the implementation of these goals are:

1. Organization of the biannual Symposium;

2. Exchange of experiences, information and encouragement in the discussions related to all aspects of modern medicinal chemistry;

3. Establishment of working groups to study the issues related to medicinal chemistry and their interfaces;

4. The offering of short-courses intended for the understanding of the pharmacological effects, chemical structures, targets and sites of action; biological tests to obtain appropriate data on structure–activity relationships (SAR);

5. Creating and offering the BrazMedChem senior and young age talented but mature scientist awards to encourage researchers in medicinal chemistry science.
