SHORT HISTORY
The need to improve the integration among all Brazilian
researchers devoted to theoretical chemistry was a great motivation to
Prof. Marco Antônio Chaer Nascimento to organize a Meeting of Theoretical
Chemistry, at Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas Físicas (CBPF), in
Rio de Janeiro, in 1979. About fifty enthusiastic participants attended
that meeting. The pleasant atmosphere and the high standard of the papers
and talks presented were so impressing that it was decided that another
meeting should be organized, resulting in the I Brazilian Symposium of
Theoretical Chemistry in 1981, also organized by Prof. Chaer, at the same
place. The number of participants increased, and two renowned scientists
joined the Brazilian community of theoretical chemists during that event:
Prof. William Goddard III, and Prof. Maximo Simonetta. During that meeting,
it was decided that the SBQT should be realized every two years, in other
parts of our country.
The II SBQT was held in Campinas, in 1983, and it was
evident that the number of participants was growing much faster. Following
the same outlines of the I SBQT, two eminent researches were present: Prof.
John Pople (Nobel Prize of Chemistry, 1998), and Prof. Vincent McKoy. All
participants had approximately 20 minutes to an oral presentation of their
researches. There was no need for a poster section, because there was enough
time for oral presentation of all participants, besides the plenary lectures.
The III SBQT took place in São Carlos, in 1985,
following the general lines of the previous editions. However, an important
characteristic of that meeting was the presence of a great number of Latin
American scientists, among them Prof. Eduardo A. Castro e Prof. Eduardo
V. Ludeña.
Due mainly to financial reasons, from the fourth SBQT
the community decided to move definitively the symposium to the city of
Caxambu, state of Minas Gerais. Caxambu is in a convenient geographic place
situated at approximately equal distances from Rio de Janeiro, São
Paulo and Belo Horizonte, the three main regions that concentrate about
80% of the theoretical community. Since then, all the following meeting
have been realized in Caxambú, at Hotel Glória.
The number of posters increased significantly, and it
was impossible to present all of them during oral sections. Therefore,
during the IV SBQT it was created the poster section, in order to give
the opportunity to all participants show and discuss their contributions
with the whole community.
The SBQT was created with three main objectives: (i) to
promote an interaction between theoreticians and experimentalists; (ii)
to publicize the work realized in the country; and (iii) to strengthen
the theoretical area as a whole. The symposium reached the twelfth edition,
faithful to the original objectives, which were broadened over the last
twenty years, with admirable and unquestionable success. Nowadays the SBQT
constitute the biggest and most important theoretical scientific event
in Latin America, providing a rich and stimulating environment for scientific
discussion, being extremely motivating for students and young researchers.
The contribution of the SBQT to the development of the
theoretical area in the country is undeniable. Theoretical chemistry, considered
in the past as an area of purely academic interest, is now recognized as
of great importance in the formation of contemporary chemists. The undergraduate
and graduate courses addressing Theoretical Chemistry multiplied all over
the country. In the present time, Theoretical Chemistry in Brazil includes
contributions from various specific areas such as Quantum Chemistry, Atomic
and Molecular Dynamics, Computational Simulation of Liquid and Solid systems,
Molecular Modeling of Systems of Biological and Technological interest,
Chemical Catalysis, Physical Organic Chemistry, among others. Although
the SBQT has, beyond any doubt, contributed to increase the scientific
production of the area, the most outstanding contribution is the enhancement
of the quality of the scientific works produced in the country. In quantitative
terms, from 53 contributions presented in the first SBQT in 1981, we reached
more than 400 in the last symposium. In addition, as a result of the increasing
quality of the works presented, from the V SBQT to the X SBQT the annals
of the symposium were published as special issues of the Journal of Molecular
Structure (THEOCHEM). From the XI SBQT on, the annals have been published
as a special issue of the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry. To
the best of our knowledge, this is the only Brazilian event in the chemical
area that achieved such recognition from the international scientific community.
In 2003 we are going to celebrate twenty two years of
existence of the SBQT, a result of the great effort of the whole community
to keep alive two decades of tradition in Theoretical Chemistry in our
country. In this Symposium, as it has been happening in previous years,
the subjects of the oral communications and plenary talks will be as much
diversified as possible, aiming to cover the distinct areas of research
existent in the theoretical community in our country.
