The
8th Scandinavian Symposium on Chemometrics (SSC8)
Åland,
June 14-18 2003
The 8th Scandinavian Symposium on Chemometrics was held June 14-18 2003 in Mariehamn, Åland. Around 140 participants enjoyed sunny weather, interesting scientific presentations, good food and not the least, late night beers with colleagues and friends. It was chaired by Torbjörn Lundstedt and organised by the Chemometrics division within the Swedish Chemical Society.
SSC8 Awards
Several awards were handed out during the conference. The most prestigious, the Herman Wold medal, was this time awarded to Rolf Carlson, University of Tromsö, for his pioneering work and enthusiasm in multivariate design and organic synthesis.
"For his pioneering work and never failing enthusiasm, to an objective driven problem solving in organic chemistry. Using the combination of experimental design and multivariate data analysis. His contributions to multivariate design are path breaking. Rolf has devoted much of his time towards reagent characterisations. There are numerous articles dealing with principle property estimations of solvents, Lewis acids, ketones, aldehydes, amines, etc. Each one conveying the passion and conviction of the awardee of the optimal experimentation. To summarise his wisdom, Rolf wrote the book "Design and optimisation in organic synthesis" published by Elsevier, Amsterdam 1992. This best selling volume is a blue-print on how to conduct informationally sound experiments in organic and medicinal chemistry"

Emerging Chemometricians Award 2003
Umetrics AB contributed two awards to emerging Chemometricians, each of EURO 1000. The prize for best oral presentation was given to Geir Rune Flåten, CPACT, Hull University, UK for his presentation entitled "Choosing the right calibration model – A new approach to an old problem."
The prize for best poster was given to the duo Pär Jonsson and Jonas Gullberg of Umeå University for their contribution Optimization of Preparation of Plant Samples for Metabolic Profiling by GC-MS.
